Scholarships available for Blues to Jazz

The Yachats Big Band and the Del Chinburg Music Education fund are providing funding for a limited number of scholarships to assist students who want attend "Blues to Jazz," a series of 8 improvisation classes beginning in April.

The classes will present practical information to musicians with an intermediate level of instrumental knowledge and skills and is designed for students in high school, or home schooled, as well as adult musicians wanting to improve their improvisation skills. The course will start with basic blues progressions and scales and move to discussions of chord construction, chord/scale relationships, song forms, ear training, melodic and rhythmic development, and other skill areas important to improving the players' understanding.

The program was inspired by the realization that educational
opportunities for basic and intermediate level musicians are limited in our community despite the presence of many excellent professional and semi-professional instrumentalists and music educators. Gerry Bellavita, local musician and organizer for the program, hopes that the course will prepare a group of students able to take advantage of the upcoming Mel Brown Jazz Camp scheduled for September 5, 6, and 7, just before the Jazz at Newport Festival.

Classes will be limited to 20 participants, will be presented by local musicians, and will run from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesdays, April 18 until June 6 in the club house of Outdoor Resorts Pacific Shores Motorcoach Resort.

Classes will consist of one hour of discussion and demonstration, and one hour of practical application of the material. A public recital will be scheduled at the completion of the program series. Students will be required to have, at a minimum, the ability to read and play a two-octave chromatic scale on their instrument. Classes will be presented in a supportive environment that values the sharing of knowledge and the different perspectives that improvising musicians bring to their craft.

Tuition for the Blues to Jazz improvisation class is $150 for the
series. Students needing scholarship assistance to attend the course are encouraged to apply early. Applications and scholarships forms are available at Newport and Lincoln City libraries and community centers as well as all Lincoln County High Schools or by contacting Gerry Bellavita at gbella@teleport.com <mailto:gbella@teleport.com> and should be received by March 31. Scholarships will be awarded on a needs basis up to the limit of funds available.

Jazz Clinics

Apprentice musicans of all ages can appreciate the commitment it takes to become a professional jazz “sideman.” No one said it couldn’t be fun though! Calamity Jazz musician/instructors thoroughly enjoy turning novice players on to the sheer joy of jamming over the changes, or riffing behind a soloist while he’s taking a ride on a hot chart.

Don’t understand the lingo? ...maybe you should think about holding a Calamity Jazz workshop at your school or club! Your organization’s jazz clinic may even be eligible for educational or government financial assistance.
